Design & Typography
Esther Le Roy is a French independent Brussels-based designer-typographer. Mainly involved in the broad field of Art and Culture, her practice revolves around printed and digital matter, from books, publications, graphics, exhibition to identity projects for institutions, businesses and individuals. More than a quest for new representations, she likes to think of design as a way to shape new meanings and unveil new statements. Consequently, her practice encourages collaboration with clients and considers dialogue as an immediate means to develop bespoke solutions and unique objects whose form arises from specific content and context.
Simultaneously with her engagement in a responsible design, she holds a particular interest in the book as a “meta” — a committed and self-critical shapeshifting tool that uncovers senses by questioning its form, canons, common thoughts, audience, dissemination and access conditions.
Prior to her current activity, she has been working as collaborator at Studio Otamendi and more recently as senior designer-typographer at Studio Luc Derycke / MER. Paper Kunsthalle. Alongside her daily practice, she teaches Typography and Editorial design at ENSAV – La Cambre, and nourishes a strong interest in critical, alternative and experimental pedagogies.
